I am making a formal challenge to those who remain true believers in the War in Iraq. When I speak of true believers I am not merely referring to the large group of Utahans and Americans who believe we should not “cut and run”. This challenge is issued to those who sincerely still believe that the decision to invade and occupy Iraq in 2003 was the right decision- those that believe in WMD’s, those that believe in links between al-Queda and Saddam, and those who believe Iraq posed a security threat to the United States.
Rocky Anderson’s anti-war speech yesterday was broken down into three parts. First, he addressed patriotism and the need for scrutiny of government. Next, he gave a very lawyer-esque point-by-point case for why the invasion of Iraq was wrong. Finally, he enumerated a long list of policies he felt the Bush Administration has bungled.
My challenge to the few True Believers that remain is this- take the second section of Rocky’s speech and offer a point-by-point refutation to each argument. I want to see empirical, sited evidence. You can disregard the charged hyperbole and loaded adjectives that Rocky used- those are beyond the scope of this exercise. Rocky’s case against the war in that second section was truly impressive in it’s detail, logic and strength of argument. While I really have problems with the third portion of the speech, the second portion- the case against the war- was a grand slam.
I want to see a non-emotional, fully articulated, logical and documented rebuttal to the second part of Rocky’s speech. There are a few reasons I want to hear it. First, as an opponent of the War, I feel that the True Believers who have been spoken have deprived the public discourse of this kind of valuable argument. I sincerely believe (and hope) it can be made. Second, because on both sides, this issue has become highly emotional, and therefore illogical, even drifting firmly into the realm of polarization and Truthiness.
The winner of this challenge will have their rebuttal posted on this blog and will have an opportunity to read it on 610 KVNU during For the People and will also receive some of Ryan’s season Aggie football tickets (slightly better than a kick in the pants).
Thos willing to accept the challenge please email your rebuttal to Rocky at tom[at]usuaggies.com.
One Utah has posted the full text in .pdf form here. The second section begins on the bottom of page three and ends at the top of page eight.
Best of luck and I hope that there are True Believers in the War in Iraq who are willing to accept this challenge!
