One of the interesting dynamics of Utah politics is that while we are the reddest state in the nation, our elected officials, especially in State Legislature, tend to be even redder. And some of the moral legislation tends to be the deepest shade of red.
I hypthesize that this is the result of a tendency for those on the far left and right to be disproportionately involved in the political process. The more liberal or conservative you are, the more likely you are to show up to mass meetings, conventions, volunteer your time and even lobby.
A great example of this is the Utah Eagle Forum. Perhaps no grassroots organization is as powerful or influencial in Utah politics. This is a group of passionate, highly organized folks who work hard to lobby the legislature to enact neocon legislation. They have phone and email trees that can quickly inundate legislators and sway legislation. That being said, the Eagle Forum resides far to the right of the average Utahn.
From the Eagle Forum’s website:
UTAH EAGLE FORUM has achieved an equally distinguished record within the State of Utah and has become a recognized leader for conservative principles while accomplishing the following:
Aiding in drafting and passing Pro-Life legislation
Thwarting the passage of “Hate Crimes” legislation
Bringing the anti-family “Values” and sex education programs in public schools to halt.
Protecting Parental Rights.
Preserving choice in education for parents, including home school.
Supporting the right of all to choose health care, including alternative methods.
Championing the preservation of religious liberty
These objectives seem rather innocuous by themselves. However, when the rubber hits the road the group seems to want to legislate their personal values on the rest of the state. Don’t get me wrong, I have personally chosen a lot of those same values. I think they’re great for me. But the rights of others to self determine their lives should be respected.
Right now, the Eagle Forum wants to legislate their morals to the general population on such issues as “gambling-like” activities, video games, student clubs, protective orders, cervical cancer and more.
I wish our country could get out of the paradigm that if morals are to be present in our society they must come through government. I also loathe the paradigm that opposition to government legislated morality is advocating a society without morals.
Morals and religion are essential to our society. We need them to maintain peace, order, stability and progress. But government can’t make someone be moral. Government doesn’t have the job or the right to “protect” it’s citizens from activities that the ruling majority believes to be harmful or immoral.
Morality is a voluntary action. Morals should be promoted not by government, but by private organizations, like religions, civic groups, etc. People should be invited to participate in a variety of moral systems, and their decisions should be respected.
Government doesn’t know how to make decisions best for you. You do.
