I’ve been doing some reading of policies and laws today regarding this Sigma Nu/Michael Starks dead situation to try and figure out what could potentially happen to the people involved.
It seems pretty clear from recent statements made by Logan Police Chief Russ Roper in the media that criminal charges will be coming. We won’t know who will face the charges and how severe the charges will be until something is filed, but for now, here are some links for you to read for relevant codes.
I’ve been hearing lots of information from friends and the media and I will personally withold comment and judgment until the police release a statement, hopefully Tuesday, but I will say that based on what I’ve heard, I don’t think what happened to Michael Starks meets the traditional definition of hazing, as in it was a fraternity sponsored event that caused this to happen, but the Utah Criminal Code definition of hazing sounds quite spot on. Alas, we’ll need to wait for the police to release official word.
