Teachers. From the Herald Journal:
Cache Valley schools will need hundreds of new teachers in coming years, and Logan school officials hope a new high school course will help provide them.
Logan High School will begin offering an introduction to education course next year, which will be designed to give students a taste of teaching and hopefully inspire them to become teachers.
The year-long course will also provide credit through Utah State University’s concurrent enrollment program, Garrett said. It will fulfill the introductory course requirement for education majors. The requirements of the course will be the same for students at the high school as those taking it on campus, he said.
“We’ve got to develop a stronger base for our programs,” said Logan School District Superintendent Marshal Garrett. “Part of that is growing our own (teachers) through our own students. If they have ties to Logan, they may want to stay in Logan.”
I’m not well read enough on the the specific challenges Utah faces in keeping local teachers teaching locally, but last I had heard, wage opportunities in more well funded states plays a role. This project at LHS might be a way to overcome that until the legislature wakes up. And the idea of starting early to build a teaching force who also feel a sense of investment in the communities in which they teach is an excellent idea.
Definitely a program to keep an eye on.
