Cost of living in Utah is down. Seriously?

According to the Deseret News, the cost of living in Utah declined shortly last month.

News to me.

It seems everywhere you go, everything is a little more expensive. Hell, I paid $5.29 for a box of lucky charms last night (given I was hit with a convenience surcharge for buying them at the Island Market, which is my own fault…) but seriously, did the cost of the traditional “basket of goods” really go down?

Locally, half the categories tracked saw one-month price breaks for consumers, from a modest 0.2 percent decline in recreation costs to a 6.9 percent decrease in transportation costs, driven largely by a decline in fuel costs. Nationally, transportation dropped 5.2 percent in December. It is down 13.5 percent over 10 months, compared to a 17.7 percent decrease on the Wasatch Front.

Oh, duh, that’s what did it: Gas prices. Gas is much cheaper now. Still, $5.29 for Lucky Charms? C’mon.
