Logan officials seeking to build a new courthouse?

I’ve received information from multiple sources today, but unconfirmed from city officials, that there is a desire amongst some in Logan City to build a new municipal courthouse on the site of the old Department of Workforce Services building, near 450 North and 200 West.

Right now, an addition is being built on the current Justice Building, where the court and police are located. The police will move to the addition of the building, and City Hall will move into the place where the police were. Apparently the court will be relegated to the old city hall, which makes no sense since there’s a very nice courtroom (and also a second, unconstructed courtroom) in the current Justice Building.

I will wait to get confirmation on the desire for these plans before passing judgment, but aside from the fact that this is absolutely not the time to be embarking on new building projects, doesn’t this sound like the ultimate rearranging of deck chairs?

What are you talking about? This is the perfect time to embark on such projects, especially government facilities and government funded projects. Government needs to much bigger here locally. We need to stimulate the hell out of the economy. In fact, we should be bringing in as many out-of-state, unemployed citizens as possible (since our unemployment rate is still very low). We could assemble them into groups, one to create a problem and the other to remedy it. Or we could give them jobs by having them clear all of the snow off of the parks around town and then take solar powered blow dryers to dry up the grass so that my family and I would be able to use them during winter.

All sarcasm aside, it truthfully is a great time to build. It does create jobs. Interest rates are insanely low. Material costs are way down. Labor costs are much more affordable. If they’re going to do it anytime in the next 10 years anyway, why not now?

Isn’t the current courthouse less that ten years old? Why do they want a new one?
