Anti-gay ad in the Salt Lake Tribune: Talk amongst yourselves.

89 comments to Anti-gay ad in the Salt Lake Tribune: Talk amongst yourselves.

  • Blue in Red Zion and Drinking Liberally have some nice reactions to this.

I’m glad they ran this ad. It highlights the “crazy” on that side of the debate.

    Sutherland/Gayle/LaVar: These are your peers.

  • Harry Caines

    Jason,

Did you just call the Sutherland Institute queers?

  • Seriously? SERIOUSLY????

    This ad makes me HURL.

(LIKE I NEED MORE OF THAT RIGHT NOW!)

  • Tyson

Did I read the ad right and see the word “backdoor”? I think the writers have some suppressed leanings.

I love the caption that says “homosexuality is not a race!” As if race is the only thing that discrimination can ever apply to (ahem, religious intolerance for example, ahem).

But these guys really need to look at hiring a graphic designer, the poorly delivered message and crappy layout really get in the way of what they probably want to accomplish.

  • Alisa

This is not only offensive to homosexuals, it is offensive to my eyes. Agh. Do they really think 5 different fonts in one section catches the eye better?

  • Did Westboro Baptist help with this ad?

  • Funny you should ask, Tom, because no one will say. :)

  • The over-use of CAPS and bold are usually good signs the writing isn’t very good. I’ve noticed over the years this style of writing is prevalent in anti-Mormon, homophobic and other bigoted literature.

I know that in the short run, people are offended by these types of ads, and rightly so. I think it’s important to remember that most mainstream people, even if they don’t yet support marriage equality, have a hard time taking stuff like this seriously. I would bet the farm and my eternal salvation that not one mind was won over to the anti-marriage equality movement as a result of this ad. Infact, ads like this really advance marriage equality because they are so poorly done, mean spirited and poorly reasoned that they force main stream people to step back and re-evaluate things.

  • John Dough

You know they mean business because they’ve used, like, 27 different fonts.

  • AxelDC

I don’t think it is a coincide that they used a mixed-race gay couple to highlight the “horrors” of homosexuals.

I can’t believe they spent money on this ad. It looks like some pulp fiction scare from the 1950s, and shows what backwards, retrograde crazies are running the antigay movement.

  • QuirkySituations

They really love to see men kissing, don’t they?

  • Gaylord

Way too much text and too few pictures of men kissing. Come on, just ONE? Lame.

  • Foggg

But if you hire a graphic designer today, tomorrow you could find yourself hiring a party planner. Ahem.

  • confused

Could someone help me out here – are we to learn from this ad that all heterosexuals are stupid and marginally literate, or just the christian ones?

…or perhaps it is the “Natural Instinct of attraction given to a man and a woman by the organs of sex definition” that is at the root of all this confusion.

  • Let me also add that it is well established law that under the 14th Amendment, protected classes of people extends beyond race already (gender for example). So the fact that homosexuality is not a race does not in and of itself preclude protection under the Due Process clause.

But knowing these kinds of things would require the homophobes to open books (the kind that don’t rely on CAPS and bold), think critically, etc.

  • Steve

Wow. Of the ten stupidest things I have ever read…this ad would include, I dunno, five or six of them.

  • It is refreshing to see a current newspaper running a “vintage” pre-civil rights ad from the 1950’s, when Mormons were still very oppressed and could not be expected to show any sort of tolerance for others. Blacks were still not considered equal and even women had a ways to go. But ads like this promote an important historic…what’s that? You’re kidding? This ad is current? What on earth? No wonder the world thinks mormons are screwed. Sadly for mormons, most think their screwed even worse than the backdoor homos that frightem them so badly. “Lock up your children, there’s mormon elders coming to the door” – sound familiar? Ignorance breeds hate and hate breeds contempt and so on. You can’t fight this kind of ignorance. Its been growing for hundreds of years. But you can see what it has become. Not much. So here is what I learned today. Mormon extremists are dumb. Not that much of a revelation. Here’s what else – They are afraid their children will be taught that its ok for same sex couples to marry. Who cares? They will learn it anyway when they step outside of their shell. But most important, I learned Mormons have no access to publishing software invented after 1950. Really really sad!!!

  • PeorgieTirebiter

Okay, I think some of you may be giving these folks too much credit. For someone to actually choose the fonts would have required:
    1. A lot of work
    2. A sighted person, consciously mousing over and rejecting dozens of more reasonable choices. I mean, a monkey drinking jagermeister couldn’t have gotten this wrong. Besides, I don’t think you can even get a digital version of HATER Old School, much less in, oblique, bold and Nueve.

I’m thinking this was definitely done using Cut and Paste 1.0
(safety scissors, library paste and a photocopier)

  • michael c.

Why do bigots always have poor design skills?
    (this, phelps church, etc.)

  • “Homosexual Declaration of War?”

Wow. Clearly, this ad is aimed directly at the very stupidest people still able to read.

  • bleach

Consciencely? Is that even a word?

  • Scott Hanlon

I think all the above posts are spot on, and dare I say, very funny. This is ground zero in a very serious matter. Your collective levity, irony, humor in the face of the haters, is, well, inspiring. (Note: I was tempted to use italics, bold, different typefaces, underline in this post…but decided not to.)

  • Lulz

I like how it says the gays are intolerant, after of course, comparing homosexuals to prostitutes and drug dealers.

Way to preach the Word of Christ, jackasses.

I guess when you are LOSING your own self-declared “culture war” (and losing fast) you have to resort to desperate measures, like bald-faced lying in caps.

  • majii

This ad is clearly an attempt to portray teh gays as sub-human and a threat to heterosexuals. Do these people think that teh gays have no intelligence or moral character? If so, they are are targeting the wrong people. Do they have mirrors? If they do, I don’t think they’d be willing to take a critical look at themselves for fear of discovering their own lack of inteligence and morals. The hatred which would be reflected back at them would probably cause instantaneous death. Who are they to think they are “holier than thou?” And they call themselves “Christians?”

“Way to preach the Word of Christ, jackasses.”

Sounds pretty bang-on to me. Of course, I’m speaking about Bush’s version of Jesus, not the actual one.

  • Stephen

“Why do bigots always have poor design skills?”
Because to be otherwise would be “gay”

  • Straight Male

Kudos to governor Huntsman! Shame on the LDS church. When you do not pay taxes you should not be able to support political agendas. Guess what Marmons homosexuality exists, accept it! americaforever your website looks cheap you will never convince anybody not of your faith with a crappy website!

It may not be about hate but it is about your beliefs which is equally as dangerous.

Thank flying spaghetti monster for Google: The “declaration of war” was a satirical, if bitter, essay from 1987 by a guy called Micheal Swift. Citing it as if it was meant for real…doesn’t that come under bearing false witness?
Oh, and the guy who read this into the records of the House of Representatives was a William E. Dannemeyer, honorary national chairman of Citizens for a Better America. ‘Nuff said.

A lot of childish and reactionary posts being put up in response to this. It just makes me laugh. From Tom Grover saying, “it’s important to remember that most mainstream people, even if they don’t yet support marriage equality, have a hard time taking stuff like this seriously…” to the person referred to as confused, blurting, “are we to learn from this ad that all heterosexuals are stupid and marginally literate, or just the christian ones? … or perhaps it is the “Natural Instinct of attraction given to a man and a woman by the organs of sex definition” that is at the root of all this confusion.” Where is Jason Williams with his famous cry for intelligent discussion when you need him?

Tom, I do agree with all of what you said, except for the choice you made to use the word ‘yet’ in the quote I took from your earlier post. As if those who don’t support or believe in gay marriage are somehow stuck in a different time period and they will come around eventually…when they become enlightened and/or increase their intelligence. Then again, maybe I’m just reading too much into your post.

As for ‘confused’…very immature & childish could be your nickname. However, many of those who have posted here regarding this issue should follow in your footsteps for new nicknames.

There is some irony to be recognized in this post. It did start out with an interesting, intriguing and controversial issue. The first comments were good, well thought expressions that made sense. But quickly the comments changed…most of the comments made do exactly what the ad did, they breed hate, distrust, disgust, and so on. If you want your side of the issue to progress, use cheap attacks like the ad to help you, don’t resort to name-calling and lumping all Mormons, Christians and heterosexuals into the same heap of dung, as some of you have. By letting your emotions get the best of you, you do exactly what the creators of the ad have done. Emotions under control are your friend, but when your emotions control you, they quickly become your enemy.

  • a snyder has it right. the best way to combat these idiots is to give money to their opponents. in politics these days it’s the best funded that get their voices heard, not the ones with the most valid message.

  • Regan DuCasse

One’s religious choice isn’t a ‘race’ either, but count on those who say man’s law cannot trump ‘God’s law’ to utilize Constitutional privilege to deny a distinct minority of THEIR human and civil rights.
Homosexuality predates every religion known to man, but is universal and indigenous TO every culture known to man, so why is the word ‘lifestyle’ conflated to a biological attribute and not ‘religious lifestyle’?

And utilizing a sarcastic satirical manifesto as a truthful declaration FROM homosexuals, rather than the actual instinct that gay people have ALWAYS had in participating in affirming socially supportive structures doesn’t, does epitomize choosing abstract bigotry over rational substance.

When are those heterosupremacist values going to embarrass them the way white supremacist values eventually have?

  • Michael P

The ad does read like Westboro church. Thanks all for your comments.

I wish “liberals” would get a little more hard-edged, and push back more. Maybe then we could reclaim the word.

I have another word we could use to talk about this ad: “hypocrisy.” When you talk about good morals and upholding society, and in the process drag it down by bearing false witness against your opponents, I would say you become that which you say you hate.

  • Kristen from MA

How exactly would the rights of the majority be diminished? PLease be specific. I won’t hold my breath waiting for an answer. You people are disgraceful and should hang your heads in shame.

  • jeremy

They even screwed up “its” and “it’s” (“natural instincts against it’s (sic) own nature,” indeed).

  • BobN

But, but, but the Yes-on-8 press releases said the Mormons were in favor of civil unions…..

  • Kaye

Look people, it doesn’t matter. I’m straight but I have plenty of gay friends (who happen to be Republican, thank goodness). They don’t even agree with gays getting married b/c they just don’t see the point. Call it what you will, but homosexual relationships, however loving and nice, are by nature, screwed up. Biologically, we are supposed to perpetuate the species by having children. A same sex couple just physically can’t, therefore, there really is no point to the relationship. It’s a dead end…which is why the constant battle for marriage rights is just a joke.

I don’t appreciate being forced to accept homosexuality…just as I don’t appreciate involuntary toll roads, my guns being taken from me against my will, or Obama’s new outrageous tax burden that nobody wanted that I will now have help to pay for. I’m sure gays don’t appreciate a lot of things like that either…but it’s like you guys are making it a point to infiltrate normal people’s lives with your lifestyle. I don’t hang around drug addicts, neither would you. I don’t hang with prostitutes, neither would you. Not to equate gays with drug addicts and hookers, but the principle is the same. I choose not to associate myself with certain groups of people b/c I DON’T WANT TO…so why are you trying to make everyone do something they don’t want to do? And in typical liberal fashion, you try to demonize an organization that publicly disagrees with you. Typical lefty BS.

  • Kaye

You Liberals need to be made to understand that we don’t HAVE to accept everything you want us to accept. It goes both ways. Someone is not a redneck if they don’t agree with sodomy…someone is not ignorant if they don’t want their children to accept tribadism, or to watch two men or two women kissing. We would never force you to believe in God or go to church if you didn’t want to…we would never force you to carry guns if you didn’t want to. Why should we have to accept global warming (and pay for it) if we don’t want to or don’t believe in it? Where do you people get off pumping your ideals into the lives of everyone else? Are you just that bored that you have nothing else better to do? You claim that what you want is to make the world a better place for everyone by teaching acceptance. That is incorrect…you would be making the world better for YOU and to heck with everyone else. That’s like Hitler and being a Nazi…he pumped his lousy politics into Germany and you were either on his side, or you weren’t…and we all know what it was like for everyone that opposed him.

  • It’s reassuring to know that in a time of hella-scary global economic crisis, some of our leaders know to ask just the right questions.

“What is the morals of a gay person? You can’t answer that because anything goes.”

    http://www.abc4.com/content/news/top%20stories/story/EXCLUSIVE-Senator-Buttars-compares-some-gays-to/5k4Qh7clXUqlXFxVM2bCxA.cspx

That’s a Utah state senator talking. Hm. What is the morals of a gay person? I don’t know. I would like to know: Is our senators learning?

Let’s behold more of the effluvia flowing from the senator’s lovely, luscious, oh-so-kissable lips:

“[Gay people are] probably the greatest threat to America going down I know of.”

“Going down?” I’ll thank you to remind yourself, senator, that this is a family blog.

“They’re mean. They want to talk about being nice. They’re the meanest buggers I have ever seen.”

“Bugger.” The right honorable gentleman from Utah knows that’s a verb as well as a noun, doesn’t he? (Alas, maybe not, if our leaders truly isn’t learning.)

Anyway, I understand his frustration. A string of homosexuals must have thrown up in their mouths a little, before fleeing in horror, when the flabby dignitary requested that they fellate him in a public bathroom. He has every right to be upset. Come on — what does Larry Craig have that HE doesn’t?

Oh, have I mentioned the senator’s name yet?

    Chris Buttars.

Right. Buttars. Butt-arse. That’s two rear ends for the price of one.

    No lifelong issues there.

So Kaye if a woman is unable to children, she shouldn’t be able to get married right? Because if you can’t have kids there is no point in getting married right?
