Tthe civil rights movement of the 1950′s/1960′s had little if anything to do with restoring rights. It was a fight for equality. The severity and longevity of suffrage was different, but the goal of the fight for equal rights and treatment then, as in the gay rights movement of today, is actually quite similar.
I did find the Oscars a bit preachey though. Sean Penn has a high horse now and then.
