A new study shows that Americans spend an average of eight hours a day viewing “screens” such as televisions, computers, cell phones and other devices.
My first reaction reading this? That’s a lot, but probably not too far off.
It makes one wonder what, if anything this is doing to us as a people. Yes, it promotes a sedentary lifestyle, but are we better off or worse off as a result? I know that I personally am consistently checking my phone to see if I have new e-mail, new Facebook messages, texts and browsing. Meanwhile, I spend about six hours every day looking at a screen for my job, including most of the time I’m on the air. Then I watch my television programs…I’m almost certainly exceeding eight hours a day in front of screens.
It’s hard to quantify an exact amount of how much time I look at my phone or am in front of a computer, but as far as television goes, we can get a good idea of that (vote in the poll below).
As far as the study went, Americans age 65 and older watched an average of 420 minutes of TV a day (7 hours, are you kidding me?) while 18-24 year olds (a demographic I’m sad to no longer be a part of) viewed 210 minutes of TV.
Average amount of time watching online video was just over two minutes a day (I’m guessing that’s a lot higher for this blog crowd) and the average amount of time in front of a computer screen was 142 minutes a day.
