What is the greatest danger facing our society?
An interesting question is posed over at The Senate Site. What is the greatest danger facing our society?
The question was posted in a post by Senate Majority Assistant Whip Greg Bell, spurred by a question he was asked by a college student for one of her classes.
Sen. Bell’s answer? Expansion of the federal government into areas he believes are unconstitutional.
…whether or not these actions are unconstitutional, the funding for the federal government’s programs and bail-out packages is unsustainable. The government has shouldered staggering debt to finance programs and the bail-outs. The massive expenditure of funds in the bail-out/stimulus packages will, by almost everyone’s admission, cause serious inflation. Moreover, taxes will have to be increased, jobs and company expansions will be curtailed with higher taxes, and more and more people will become dependent on the federal government for income, health care and food.
The senator goes on to say that, generally, he believes we can no longer afford the government we’re getting. He references other states like california and New York were government got too big for its britches and are now running into tax problems.
Do you agree with Sen. Bell that government expansion is the biggest threat to our society, even moreso than social ills (abortion, gay marriage, drugs) and other types of corruption? Or do these things, in a way, go hand in hand?
Your thoughts, please.
