Will the LDS Church Address Climate Change?
Yesterday leaders of the LDS Church met with Al Gore “to discuss climate change and its solutions.”
From the Salt Lake Tribune:
Al Gore met Thursday with LDS Church leaders in Salt Lake City.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner and former U.S. vice president requested the dinner time meeting to discuss climate change and its solutions, sources said.
Gore had a brief courtesy visit with President Thomas S. Monson before talking with other church leaders.
Gore did not make a public appearance or speak with reporters.
Church spokesman Scott Trotter called it “a cordial meeting” attended by Elder M. Russell Ballard, Elder Quentin L. Cook and other members of the church’s Public Affairs Committee.
Gore “gave a 30-minute presentation and expressed his concerns about CO2 emissions, which was followed by several minutes of questions and answers,” said Trotter.
While many Christians have begun treating global warming as a moral issue, Mormon Church leaders have opted against addressing climate protection with their 13 million members. A church spokesman said three years ago, “The church has not taken a position on this issue, and I don’t expect any new developments in the near future.”
Then, last Saturday, church officials participated in the worldwide “Earth Hour” campaign to draw attention to climate change. The Salt Lake Temple’s outside lights were darkened for an hour along with those in 88 countries…”
It wouldn’t surprise me to see leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints directly address important issues like Climate Change. It is my opinion that such developments contradict the supposition that some hold that the LDS Church is simply fueled by a “conservative” agenda. As a global organization with millions of adherants, the Church has been steadily growing in many parts of the world and as a result, incorporates millions of different viewpoints and opinions. Some may say that Mormons are distinctly partisan when it comes to politics, but I predict that Mormons will being to represent a more “moderate” voice in the world of politics.

I’m waiting for someone over at OneUtah dot Org to figure out an excuse to bash the LDS Church over this. Bigotry is bigotry and it doesn’t rest.

I’m pretty sure that the Church will address possible climate change in some way, but it will probably be related to temporal welfare and preparedness issues more than political action. If they do make an official statement, they will surely refer to more scientifically reputable sources than Mr. Gore.

Okelberry,
You are usually quite prompt in commenting at OneUtah whenever anyone mentions religion or church, but I haven’t seen your comment yet on my latest post there (Come Come Ye Saints). Were you disappointed that I had something positive to say about religious people?
When you say bigotry doesn’t rest, Okelberry, I assume you include your own.

We should all know exactly how President Benson would have dealt with this agenda. His constant vigilance against anti-constitutional scams in sheep’s clothing gives it away. This man-made global warming agenda fits his exact descriptions of freedom-robbing scams, laws and policies as he identified the scammers: “Turn your lives over to us so we can save you and make all your fears (which we create with our clever lies) go away…”
This all ties in tightly to my favorite and oldest hobby – astronomy. My love and ongoing interest in astronomy helped me realize that there really was nothing out there to “get me” in the dark, under the beautiful night-time sky. I also learned from astronomy that astrology is just a bunch of bunk as well. The principles of learning about astronomy also leads to looking at opposing theories and not being intimidated into rejecting or ignoring other theories and views.
Well, look at the ilk of those who avidly support these types of agenda – clever attorneys, politicians (FDR Huntsman…), etc…
Real scientists and astronomers could only find 35 issues in Algore’s movie to be lies and hysteria, trying to crowd out any dissenting voice of reason and evidence. These types of agendas (as President Benson and our founding fathers pointed out clearly and specifically) are only based on lies and hysteria aimed at getting all of us to believe those lies. Man-made global warming hysteria is no different than the DV agenda and other equally dishonest and fraudulent agendas.
