Library Vote Postponed
Jennie ChristensenA vote that would have provided library service to Cache County’s unincorporated area residents at a reduced rate was postponed last night, but it was apparently doomed for failure. Both the Cache County Council and the Logan Library Board have voted unanimously for the proposal, which would cost residents $75 per card plus the county would pay Logan City $30 per card on an 18-month trial basis.
Logan City Council member Herm Olsen’s motion to approve the resolution was seconded by Jay Monson, who co-authored the draft along with County Council Member Craig Peterson. City council members Laraine Swenson and Steve Thompson said the plan would be unfair to Logan residents.
The motion was withdrawn after Tami Pyfer suggested postponing the decision for two to four weeks to study the proposal further.
Needless to say, I’m disappointed in this. It frustrates me that after the Logan Library Board OK’s this (unanimously) and the Cache County Council OK’s this (unanimously) that three members of the Logan Municipal Council can and likely will effectively kill a simple proposal that would give about 7,000 members of the unincorporated county community access to the Logan Library. Some councilmembers are saying this is unfair to Logan residents, but exactly which Logan residents are stepping up and saying they care? Are there really people out there who are so selfish they’d be upset to give access to the library at a nominal cost to other members of our community (which believe it or not reaches beyond Logan)?
Kudos to Jay Monson and Herm Olsen for being prepared to do the right thing on this vote.

The proposal is for a citizen to pay $75.00/year for a Logan Library card, and the county OR city will pay $30/year (see Library Vote Postponed). [...]
