A lot to recap here folks.
First of all, on Monday, USU student Grant Barney was sentenced to eight days in jail and community service for his part in the alcohol-poisoning death of Michael Starks last year. Barner reportedly hosted the event where the drinking took place.
Monday’s sentencing, according to the Salt Lake Tribune, comes just two days after another USU student, 29-year-old Nicholas Mason, died in a possible alcohol related death at his apartment at 1549 N. 540 West.
From SLTrib:
Nicholas Mason, 29, completed his last final exam Thursday and then drank beer in his Logan home at 1549 N. 540 West, according to Logan police. After finding him unresponsive later than night, his roommates began CPR and summoned emergency help. Mason was pronounced dead at Logan Regional Hospital early Friday, the morning before USU’s commencement.
At Barney’s sentencing on Monday, 1st District Judge Thomas Willmore referenced the death of Mason.
Another student, Whitney Miller, 19, who was accused of supplying the vodka that Starks drank, will be sentenced today. Barney, incidentally, was charged with throwing the bottle of vodka away. A charge of hazing was dismissed in his case. Three other cases have also been dismissed against other students.
