What’s in a name? Consulting firm says South Salt Lake should change its name
What’s in the name of a town?
In Cache Valley, you need not go any farther than just south of Logan to find out.
Find someone who lives in Young Ward and tell them they live in College Ward, and they’ll snap at you. There is, after all, a big difference between College Wardians and Young Wardians.
So when a hoity toity marketing firm suggests your city change its name, as is happening in South Salt Lake right now, what’s your reaction?
What is, after all, in a name?
For me, South Salt Lake evokes images of Salt Lake that are well, south of Salt Lake proper. Those are, for the record, not good images. Name changes don’t come cheap, either.
In Cache Valley, there’s been some movements for town name changes in the past. There has, at times, been contingents looking to change the name of North Logan to something else, perhaps Greenville. Some have suggested Hyrum change its name to Stinkville (ok, I made that up) and there may be more.
Is it appropriate for a city to look to change its name if the images evoked by the name are not positive?
