  1. I follow your sentiments about how the market should dictate how much value businesses place on the appearance of their facilities…BUT… I also believe that businesses still do have the final choice in this matter. If they don’t want to comply with the standards set forth by the planning commission… they simply could choose to build their corporate empire somewhere else. If the citizens of Logan elect officials who govern in such a manner, then the citizens of Logan will not mind if they lose out on some of the businesses who choose not to build here.

The same argument can be used on the war on rentals… If the citizens of Logan don’t want a city counsel that hates basement apartments…VOTE THEM OUT! If you value property rights over “cleaning up the trash” use your vote.

  2. After serving a stint on a planning and zoning board in a smaller town I have noticed a few of things
1- A lot of us have a disease called “Last building permit syndrome” We feel we have the right to do what we want but do not want to let others in the same bubble with us.
2- Another disease is “NIMBY” ,we need to do this, or it is a good thing, but, NOT IN MY BACK YARD! ie: garbage dump, group home, alternate energy sources, apartments, retirement homes etc.
3- All business want their neighbors buildings to look great and want the city to make sure it is just so….. but please do not tell me what to do with my building.
4- We say, lets lock up the land. Tell that landowner he can not build or do anything with his land. Lets change the zoning in that area so nothing but farming can be done there. Oops, now I need to get some gravel or build homes on my land and how dare you suggest we keep it as green space and zone it so that I can not do as I please with it
5- What I want and what you want are different and always will be.
