All I can say here is that I hope every reader of this blog will click on the link above and take 15 minutes to watch the documentary about Reggie Shaw, the man who was convicted of texting while driving in 2006 and killed two men in a crash on Valley View Highway.
Watch the video and share it with everyone you know who drives or will drive some day.
It is that powerful.

Very powerful video. It will certainly make me think twice before doing anything other than focusing on the road. I do think it’s important to send a message that texting is not the only bad thing to do while driving. It’s dangerous to do anything that distracts you from the road, even if it’s just talking to the person in the passenger seat, if that distracts you.
Yes, when we are driving, we should all just… drive.
On my drive home today I had another thought. I kept looking up at billboards on I-15 near SLC. Should billboards be illegal? Should freeways and highways be contained inside high walls so drivers have nothing to distract them? Where do you draw the line?
I agree that it’s a powerful video. That Reggie Shaw seems like a good guy. I hope that he can have a full productive life.
@Matt
Draw the line at every person being responsible for their own actions and being held accountable for the consequences of those actions. Anything beyond that is unnecessary and wrong.
@Matt
I don’t have time to look this up, but I believe that at least in many states, billboards are illegal on unpopulated stretches of highway. I believe but am not certain that this is dependent on the states and isn’t a federal mandate. Of course this has more to do with maintaining the views of the countryside than safety.
Has anyone ever seen the movie Brazil, where in the closing seen the main character drives off out of the city down a road lined entirely by billboards. The camera then pans up to show nothing but wasteland going off in all directions. Great movie if you haven’t seen it.
Still, interesting point Matt, especially considering Logan’s attempt to curtail bright flashing signs like the one at KVNU.
Urge… I mispelled “scene.” – Bugger!
There was a wreck in front of my office on 7th East next to Trolley Square this morning. A texting driver hit a parked car and got flipped. Not sure of the details, but it closed the whole road for a while.
@Matt you are so ignorant.
