It appears this first nasty cold-snap of the season has already put tremendous strain on the Western power-grid.
http://tinyurl.com/ydar8mh (Cache Valley Daily linked article)
Things like this seem to occur throughout one or more of the Western states at seasonal peaks. Yet the unlimited gobbling up of land, and endless subdivision construction never seem to even slow. Water resources are limited. Power-demand is beginning to reach the regional generated capacity. Without prudent and progressive planning by forward thinking councilmen and city planners, residents of these ‘free’ states will soon wake up to the same smelly, crowded and disgusting megalopolis that I grew up with in New Jersey. Such behavior unfortunately illustrated well in Cache Valley. I urge state and county politicians, landowners and city planners in Cache Valley municipalities to consider the (not-so-)long term repercussions of negligence, greed and irresponsibility of allowing this explosive growth to continue in the absence of proper planning. Green Space issues may seem petty now, but can quickly be the very thing that allows expanding communities to maintain the quality of life that got them there.
Consider the stereotypical image of New Jersey the next time it takes you 33 minutes to drive 5 miles down Main St. in Logan…

Well, Grump…
You certainly are a better selection than Tim “the Plagiarist” Carter to fill out things at KVNU. Still, I find it strange that KVNU would put their name behind an anonymous writers. I know that when Jason first started he went by “Jason The” and when Marc Neilson started he went by Federal Farmer. Of course, most people already knew who they were and they both almost immediately dropped their online names in favor of stepping up.
So who are you, Grumpy? What do you do for a living? What brought you to Utah from New Jersey? (BTW: have you seen Jersey Shore on MTV… It explains Soooo much about you!) Don’t you really think it’s time to step up and stand behind what you write? You’re with the big boys now, Grumpy. It’s about time you begin acting like it, don’t you think?
Now for your essay…
Is that code for, “bring in the Community Organizers?”
Also, what is your suggestion?
What specifically do you want our prudent and progressive city planners to do? Are you just complaining or do you have some concrete ideas? Green space seems to be an issue; are you suggesting that the government raise taxes to buy up all the unimproved land here in Cache Valley? You don’t seem to like population growth; is it possible you are in support of mandatory abortions and chemical sterilizations through the water supply? (I here that the last one is a prefeered method of one of Obama’s Czars, science czar I think.)
You might find it helpful to get out of constant criticism mode and actually try to come up with some solutions the next time you decide to write something.
Hi R’Okelberry.
Thanks for your (as always) nauseatingly self-riteous input. Your absence from FTP will be noted. And now, let us address your pathetic response to a rather simple, and rather neutral post by myself.
“So, who are you Grumpy”
This one is funny, cuz you were a Facebook friend of mine for nearly two years. The fact that you don’t seem to know my name is probably an indictment of Facebook. Rich, a few others around here know who I am, so you can find out from them, or (for your convenience of course) you can choose to simply know me by the childish and narrow stereotype of a Democratic voter which you carefully constructed.
“BTW: have you seen Jersey Shore on MTV… It explains Soooo much about you!”
Wow. Really R’Okel ? Then I suppose I’ll define you through a combination of Big Love and all the Utah-born “Real World” members seen over the years.
“You’re with the big boys now, Grumpy”
I agree Rich. You are certainly NO example of that however.
…pathetic partisan kookery snipped….
“You might find it helpful to get out of constant criticism mode and actually try to come up with some solutions the next time you decide to write something.”
Jeez Rich. It was a simple post to CV residents:
“Let’s protect this beautiful place by employing a little common sense”. I’m sorry that this post, and my use of words like ‘hyperbole’ have bothered you so very much during your infamous tenure here. Ideas presented by me to problems are only meet with your drooling, ranting responses from the R’Okelberry world. I’m not saying wrong. I am saying it’s utterly unproductive.
With that in mind, kudos on your decision to move away from the FTP blog. Preaching to the choir seems like a much-needed move for you.
So… Christopher,
Have you considered that it is not so much growth in Utah that is the problem with our power shortage but an ongoing resistance to expanding power production? Where are all those windmills and solar farms that Obama promised would save us? Not a lot of good they would do us now anyway, since it is coldest at night and there hasn’t been a breeze for days. Have you even considered how Cap and Trade will likely make things worse for the West? What do you think will happen when power authorities refuse to allow those taxes to be passed on to consumers as rate increases? Rocky Mountain power will have no choice but to curtail production to stay under limits.
You seem to be arguing that the solution here is to simply stop building new homes for people to live in. Without new homes, new people just won’t exist, right? Or maybe they would just all move back to New Jersey where they have plenty of room and things are already smelly, right?
Finally, your solution to this problem is, “protect this beautiful place by employing a little common sense?” What bits of common sense are you referring to? You’ve given us nothing but criticism. And you call me unproductive?
Great first post… When you want to have an actual discussion on this issue, please let me know.
(You said “hyperbole.” You smarty pants you!
)
Rich, with all due respect, consider concerning yourself less with how the blog is being run.
The only reason the name “Grumpy” showed up in the byline of Grumpy’s post is because it was his first post and I didn’t realize the name display settings hadn’t been changed.
As you’ll be able to see, that issue has been addressed.
Thank you for the clarification Tyler, and thank you for the personal advice.
Why yes Dick, I have considered that. The windmills are being constructed through stimulus funds. It takes a bit of time. That being said, if I don’t see a ton MORE of them in 3 years time, it will be yet ANOTHER reason I will not vote for Obama. But let’s be honest here, windmills are only a bandaid. The West needs a nuclear power plant or two.
“You seem to be arguing that the solution here is to simply stop building new homes for people to live in. Without new homes, new people just won’t exist, right? Or maybe they would just all move back to New Jersey where they have plenty of room and things are already smelly, right?”
Wow. That is not what the content of my post was AT ALL. Perhaps we’ve finally arrived at the root of the problem with you. You just don’t have a firm grasp of the language.
“Finally, your solution to this problem is, “protect this beautiful place by employing a little common sense?” What bits of common sense are you referring to? You’ve given us nothing but criticism. And you call me unproductive?”
Again Rich, we come back to the whole issue of the English language. Caution and criticism are not the same thing. If you look even slightly closer at my post, you’d be able to see beyond your irrationality and see that I’m actually advocating aggressive construction…construction of highways, of power plants (wind, solar and nuclear). I’m saying do it NOW and stay ahead of the curve.
“Great first post… When you want to have an actual discussion on this issue, please let me know.”
When you’re capable, please let me know.
“(You said “hyperbole.” You smarty pants you!
)”
I’m glad you’re so easily impressed, Rich.
