Tim Bridgewater Releases Statement on No Child Left Behind
Available for Immediate Release:
Salt Lake City, UT- Earlier today, Senator Bob Bennett released a video regarding his record of the federal program, “No Child Left Behind.” In the accompanying written statement, Senator Bennett misrepresented Tim Bridgewater’s stance on NCLB by stating, “… congressional candidate by the name of Tim Bridgewater campaigned enthusiastically in support of it.”
While Tim Bridgewater did support the concept of NCLB which passed in 2001, Tim’s support for the legislation fell flat when the concept of holding teachers accountable for teaching standard curriculum turned into unfunded federal mandates and one size fits all testing. When Tim Bridgewater saw the effects of NCLB he led Utah in the fight against it as the Governor’s Deputy of Education.
“No Child Left Behind created unintended consequences at the state level. As soon as I saw these consequences I began fighting against the program, going against my own party on an issue I knew needed to be changed. Senator Bennett is well aware of my fight against No Child Left Behind and I am disappointed in his half truth on this issue,” said Tim Bridgewater.
Tim’s full fight against NCLB is well documented, and his official position on education is available at www.timbridgewater.com.

NCLB is a joke….this world needs ditchdiggers too.
The world does need ditch diggers, for certain. My grandfather, for example, did not graduate high school. He was a manual laborer his entire life. He did, however, teach himself calculus (a math gene I unfortunately did not get). As a society we should recognize there is dignity and honor in ALL honest work. However, that doesn’t mean that we throw ditch diggers aside to wallow in ignorance. Why can’t a person be enlightened AND a ditch digger?
The real reason that NCLB is a joke is that it represents the centralization of power. That in turn creates a “one size fits all” education policy, which, not surprisingly has been a total failure.
Policy decisions, especially in regards to education, are better made at the local level where needs can be tailor met. Local people better understand local needs. Success is less likely to be obscured by complicated regulations and distorted bureaucratic incentives.
It is astounding that a Republican President enacted this very anti-federalism, anti-states rights legislation. For all the complaining that I and others make about the Utah Legislature, they, and in particular Senator Dayton, deserve a tremendous amount of praise for the substantive vigorous fight they mounted against this legislation.
Yeah…what Tom said.
P.S. the ditch digger comment was a nod to Caddy shack.

Se7en,
I hate to admit this, but I have never seen Caddy Shack! Thanks for the reference and context!
Not to get too off subject, but Caddyshack was the first movie I saw with bare boobies in it. My parents had heard about how funny it was and took the whole family to the theater to see it. While at the age of 11 it was an exhilarating experience, it was also one of the most awkward experiences of my life, considering that my mother was sitting right beside me at the time. What a crazy memory.
Tom! You really must see Caddyshack, even if you have to close your eyes during one moment… It is a true classic! I especially liked it when Bill Murray was teeing off with the flowers and the Baby Ruth in the pool was something straight out of a 1970’s SNL skit.

BTW: Did you ever get a chance to take up golf, Tom?
